Conservation and Cultural Achievements in US National Parks

Steve Martin, former Deputy Director, US National Park Service (NPS), and his wife
Dr Cyd Martin, former Director of Indian Affairs & American Culture for the Intermountain Region of NPS (USA)
In this forum the Martins will introduce the US National Park system -‐ describing its history; the range of its natural and cultural areas; and its key programs and initiatives.
Using the example of the Grand Canyon National Park, a number of conservation challenges will be addressed including the issues around -‐ uranium mining; aircraft over-‐flights; Native American cooperative programs; the affects of hydro electric power on natural resources; and the infrastructure requirements for visitor enjoyment.
A number of cultural programs of interest to Australia within US protected areas will also be described. These include: subsistence uses and special accommodations for tourism and native / local residents (Alaska-‐Gates of the Arctic National Park); watershed management versus natural / cultural values, commercial cultural tourism, and contemporary best practices (Canyon de Chelly National Monument); the issues of cultural tourism and coopera:on in a remote park (Navajo National Monument); and the nexus between living history and cultural protection (Hubbell Trading Post Na:onal Historic Site).
