Steve & Cyd at FACET Forum

On Thursday night FACET hosted a talk by Steve and Cyd which was well attended and very much enjoyed.

The Forum details were as follows:

Conservation and Cultural Achievements in US National Parks
GUEST SPEAKERS
Steve Martin, former Deputy Director, US National Park Service (NPS), and his wife
Dr Cyd Martin, former Director of Indian Affairs & American Culture for the Intermountain Region of NPS (USA)
In this forum the Martins will introduce the US National Park system -­‐ describing its history; the range of its natural and cultural areas; and its key programs and initiatives.
Using the example of the Grand Canyon National Park, a number of conservation challenges will be addressed including the issues around -­‐ uranium mining; aircraft over-­‐flights; Native American cooperative programs; the affects of hydro electric power on natural resources; and the infrastructure requirements for visitor enjoyment.
A number of cultural programs of interest to Australia within US protected areas will also be described. These include: subsistence uses and special accommodations for tourism and native / local residents (Alaska-­‐Gates of the Arctic National Park); watershed management versus natural / cultural values, commercial cultural tourism, and contemporary best practices (Canyon de Chelly National Monument); the issues of cultural tourism and coopera:on in a remote park (Navajo National Monument); and the nexus between living history and cultural protection (Hubbell Trading Post Na:onal Historic Site).
